Getting to know your Updowntowners Board of Directors

(Friday, April 24, 2009)

With Katie Tauer, Updowntowners President Elect

Where do you work?
I do Marketing and Business Development for BVH Architects.

Tell us a bit about your company and what makes you unique?
BVH is a 40 year old firm that believes in Architecture that serves and inspires.

I could give you the scripted definition of BVH, but that stuff is just a marketing ploy. The best way to describe the firm is to show you. Go to bvh.com and check out our projects. The design and quality speaks for itself.
BVH operates in an open studio format which means collaboration and communication are what makes this firm thrive. You can see it in our projects, the quality of our employees and in the day to day operations.

What is your favorite quote?
“Unassuming yet blindingly fabulous” - its not technically a quote, for me its words that I live by and every time I read it I get the feeling that I can tackle anything.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off?
My favorite thing on any given day is happy hour with my friends. So my whole day off would consist of all the elements of happy hour. It would be filled with friends, cheddar cheese chex mix, the occasional shopping distraction and adult beverages.

How did you get involved with Updowntowners?
Years ago I gave a presentation to the UDT Board of Directors promoting a campaign that was taking place with a business located downtown. The group was so engaging, interactive and welcoming that I knew I wanted to be a part of this crowd. So I volunteered to be on the July Jamm Steering Committee, which led to being the Committee Chair of the Star City Holiday Parade, which has now led to being President-Elect. What started as a desire to meet interesting people with a variety of backgrounds has evolved into leading an organization that specializes in putting that “spark” into people, which in my opinion its that “spark” that makes people interesting.

What is your favorite thing about being involved with Updowntowners?
I love that the group is volunteer driven, all for the betterment of making Lincoln a great place to live. The only recognition that UDT volunteers need is the understanding that what we do directly impacts the quality of life in Lincoln. The people that make up this organization are nothing less than inspirational and the events that are produced are priceless for this community.

What is the most rewarding part of being in a leadership role with Updowntowners?
I’ve had the opportunity to meet and work with people that I wouldn’t normally get the opportunity to work with.

For example...the first year I was committee chair for the Parade, I had the opportunity to be interviewed by Ken Siemek. My parents are big fans of Ken’s, as is most of their friends and neighbors, so they had everyone they know watching the parade and I still get the question, “what was it like being interviewed by Ken Siemek”. I was a broadcast journalism major in college so my parents think its great that I actually got the chance to use skills that I went to college for. This past year I had the opportunity to co-host the Parade with Serese Cole. Working with the behind the scenes production team gave me a whole new appreciation for not only the Parade but additional volunteers and companies that step up in this community to make this city what it is.
