Getting to Know Your Updowntowners Board of Directors: Todd Porter (Tuesday, December 29, 2009) Where do you work?I am a Licensed Veterinary Technician managing the Williamsburg Animal Hospital. Tell us a bit about your company and what makes you unique? We are a full service veterinary hospital specializing in preventative care - catching health problems before they become life-threatening (and expensive). We like to make the pets' lives long and as comfortable and pain-free as possible. What is your favorite quote? I have several favorite quotes, but the one that I seem to be living with mostly is by Tom Wilson: "Wisdom doesn't necessarily come with age. Sometimes age just shows up all by itself." What is your favorite thing to do on your day off? Like many other people in society, I do get stressed with my work (saving lives, getting bit, urinated on, etc.) So, my "therapy" is in the kitchen. I love to "get lost" in cooking while watching a movie on TV. This "therapy" does end up on my mid-section, unfortunately, so I try not to get too stressed at work. How did you get involved with Updowntowners? I started with Updowntowners by volunteering in the beer booth at July Jamm. There's nothing like serving beer in little plastic cups when the mid-summer west sun is beating on the big white truck while standing on 300 degree asphalt with sticky beer on my sandals. I was in love! What is your favorite things about being involved with Updowntowners? One thing comes to mind: people. The people "behind-the-scenes" are some of the most dedicated, fun, and intelligent people that I have come across in my life. They're dedicated to put on a "show" several times a year to make the people of Lincoln happy and it works very well. I love being involved. On a selfish note (although I know I'm not alone in this), it gives me a great feeling of satisfaction to see the faces on the public. It is extremely rare to see anyone that is angry, sad or in a bad mood at these events. What is the most rewarding part of being in the leadership role with Updowntowners? I enjoy the responsibility of chairing committees with minimal pressure. The leaders of the organization cannot be more supportive if a problem arises. I never need my kitchen "therapy" with my involvement in Updowntowners! |
